The 1995-96 Santa Barbara County Grand Jury has determined that the Board of Supervisors should examine the concept of establishing a planning commission specific to the Goleta planning area.
The Grand Jury interviewed several county officials involved in the planning process, and a number of Goleta residents, activists and business people. There was strong testimony to the Grand Jury both favoring and opposing the formation of a Goleta area planning commission.
The Grand Jury is not taking a position on the planning commission itself, but the Jury did find that there were sufficient reasons for the concept to warrant consideration by the Board of Supervisors.
For the purposes of its investigation, the Grand Jury considered a general understanding of the Goleta planning area as defined in the Goleta area community plan.
The Grand Jury suggested that if there were to be a Goleta area planning commission, it should be representative of the diverse interests in the area, and be comprised of Goleta area residents.
The Board of Supervisors has 90 days to respond to the Grand Jury’s finding.
