The Santa Barbara County Grand Jury has joined the Information Highway by making its reports available to computer users with access to the World Wide Web. The Grand Jury’s new web site includes the complete text of all of last year’s Grand Jury reports, and features affected agencies’ responses to those reports. Reports of the 1995-96 Grand Jury will be added to the service as they are released.
Last year’s Grand Jury 19 reports include investigations into management and finances of county government, compensation of county employees, housing in county parks, county personnel procedure and policy, and elections procedures.
“We believe this is the first time a grand jury anywhere has made its reports and the responses so broadly available,” said Spencer Boise, the 1995-96 Grand Jury foreman. “Citizens now have a major new avenue of exposure to dialogue on current issues in county government.”
Any computer user with a modem and communications software can also send electronic mail to the Grand Jury over the Internet. Such e-mail will reach the Grand Jury mailbox just moments after it is sent.
The Grand Jury’s World Wide Web site is located at http://www.sbcgj.org/. E-mail can be sent to the Grand Jury at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The civil Grand Jury is a volunteer group of 19 county citizens selected by the Superior Court from the five supervisorial districts. The Grand Jury has investigative powers into any city, county or special district agency which receives county funds.
